Historic Lombard Chapel Fire Highlights Need for Fire Sprinklers

On August 3, 2015, a fire occurred at Maple Street Chapel, an 1870s-era chapel in Lombard. At one time, the historic church, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was home to Lombard’s first village meetings and the village’s first library

The fire occurred when a member of the chapel’s preservation society was using a heat gun to dry some wood that had been dampened by a recent rainstorm.

No one was injured, but the fire highlights the fact that the building is not protected with sprinklers. The preservation society currently is raising money to retrofit a fire sprinkler system in the historic building.
