Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition Receives 2011 Sarbanes Award

The nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC) received the 2011 Senator Paul S. Sarbanes Fire Safety Leadership Award during the 23rd annual Congressional Fire Services Institute (CFSI) dinner in Washington, D.C. in April.

Presented jointly by CFSI and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation (NFFF), the Award is named for the retired Senator from Maryland who served 36 years in Congress.  State Farm Insurance and VFIS are corporate sponsors. The award recognizes organizations for their outstanding contributions to firefighter health and safety.

“HFSC is honored to receive this award,” says HFSC Board Chair Gary Keith. “Senator Sarbanes has been a tireless advocate of the fire service throughout his career, and it is truly a privilege to be selected for an award named for him.”

A joint statement by CFSI President Bill Jenaway and NFFF Chairman Dennis Compton read, in part:  “As members of the fire service who recognize the need and benefits of home fire sprinklers, we have appreciated for many years the important work of HFSC.  In local communities throughout the nation, the Coalition is making a difference in educating the public about the life-saving benefits of home fire sprinklers.”

HFSC is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year.  The nonprofit organization develops and provides at no charge a wide range of educational materials designed to increase public understanding of the life saving value of installing fire sprinkler systems in newly constructed houses. Most of HFSC’s teaching tools have been developed in direct response to local fire department safety outreach needs.

“The fire service has always been our most active and most important partner,” Keith says.  “They have the desire to increase fire protection in their communities but they rarely have all the resources necessary to do that.  HFSC has worked side by side with fire departments for 15 years, providing them with the free materials they need to reduce home fire injuries and deaths among both civilians and first responders.  We look forward to partnering with them for the next 15!”
