Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety Supports Home Fire Sprinklers

The national noprofit Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety is “wholly supported by the property (re)insurance industry. IBHS’ mission is to conduct objective, scientific research to identify and promote effective actions that strengthen homes, businesses, and communities against natural disasters and other causes of loss. IBHS does this by conducting research and advocating improved property design, construction, maintenance, and preparation practices.”

On the IBHS website, the organization shows its support for the inclusion of residential fire sprinklers in fire and building codes:

“The Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) has long included fire sprinkler systems as a recommended part of its code-plus Fortified…for safer living® program. In November 2007, the IBHS Building Code Committee, which is comprised of representatives from a number of IBHS member insurance companies, unanimously endorsed the idea of pushing for the inclusion of fire sprinkler requirements in the residential building codes.”

The website goes into great detail citing numerous reports and studies from the National Fire Protection Association, National Fallen Firefighters Foundation, Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition and U.S. Fire Administration as its reasoning for the support of fire sprinkler protection in homes and corresponding legislation.
