ISU Fraternity House Fire Highlights Statewide Retrofit Legislation

On April 20, fire ripped through Delta Sigma Phi fraternity house at Illinois State University. All occupants escaped unharmed, however, the house was destroyed and approximately 24 students had to be relocated to on-campus residence halls.

The house was not protected with fire sprinklers, however, it was slated to have fire sprinkler installed in the near future in order to comply with the State of Illinois’ Fire Sprinkler Dormitory Act, which requires all student housing to be retrofit with fire sprinklers by 2013.

The fire event is an unfortunate reminder that post-secondary educational institutions statewide need to stay on track to meet the 2013 deadline, which will keep future college students safer and ease the minds of their parents while the students are away at school.
