Local Fire Chief to Serve as President of International Association of Fire Chiefs

Effective in August 2012, Hank Clemmensen, current fire chief of the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District, will serve a one-year term as president of the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), representing nearly 14,000 members.

The appointment is part of a four-year commitment that Clemmensen has made to IAFC where he is currently finishing his first year as second vice president. This summer, he will begin his second year by transitioning to vice president. After serving as president of IAFC in 2012-2013, he will complete his term with a fourth year in the position of past president.

As fire chief of the Palatine Rural Fire Protection District since 2001, Clemmensen presented a life safety initiative, which called for residential fire sprinklers in homes within the unincorporated areas of the fire protection district. The district board members voted unanimously to support Clemmensen’s effort and passed a residential fire sprinkler ordinance in November 2007. Since then, Clemmensen has strived for surrounding municipalities to enact similar residential fire sprinkler ordinances for the safety of residents and firefighters alike.

“We commend Chief Clemmensen for his momentous achievement,” says Tom Lia, executive director of the Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board. “He will be a great representative for the Illinois fire service — one of their own that they can call on for assistance.”
