Long-Time Residential Fire Sprinkler Defender, West Dundee Chief Buhrmann Retires

Fire Chief Frank Buhrmann from the West Dundee Fire Department retired late last year after 35 years of fire service. He began his career with the East Dundee Fire Protection District in 1976 as a paid-on-call firefighter and years later was hired by West Dundee in 1984. Within West Dundee Buhrmann was promoted to lieutenant in 1987, assistant chief in 1991, and served as fire chief from 2004 until his last shift in 2011.

During his time as assistant chief in West Dundee, Buhrmann was an instrumental part of the team that helped enact a residential fire sprinkler ordinance in August 2001.

“Chief Buhrmann was part of the first wave of fire departments in the early 2000s that advocated for residential fire sprinkler protection in the communities they served. He helped set a precedent that other communities could follow,” notes Tom Lia, executive director of the Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board. “Chief Buhrmann leaves a legacy of fire safety behind in the form of hundreds of fire sprinkler-protected homes that will last long beyond his tenure at West Dundee. We wish him well in his retirement.”
