Manhattan Mayor Recognized for Voluntarily Installing Fire Sprinklers

The eight-unit apartment building at 210 Morgan Court in Manhattan is now protected with fire sprinklers thanks to forward-thinking Mayor Borgo.

When an eight-unit apartment building at 210 Morgan Court in Manhattan was destroyed by fire, the property owners were happy to see that the fire alarms helped everyone escape safely, but they wanted to make sure that such an event never occurred again.

Owned by Manhattan Mayor William Borgo and Glenn Borgo under the name of MCT Inc., the two men analyzed the cost to rebuild the apartment building. When comparing the cost to construct with traditional materials versus constructing the building with a fire sprinkler system, they discovered it was more cost efficient to install fire sprinklers.

Currently, the Village of Manhattan requires fire sprinklers in new construction commercial buildings, but does not require the systems in any type of residential buildings. In this truly unique situation, Mayor Borgo and Glenn Borgo took it upon themselves to install fire sprinklers.

According to Mayor Borgo, “The fire sprinkler system will give tenants the peace of mind that comes with knowing that they are being protected by the best fire suppression technology available today.”

For the proactive decision to voluntarily install fire sprinklers in the apartment building at 210 Morgan Court, the Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board, National Fire Sprinkler Association – Illinois Chapter, and the Illinois Fire Inspectors Association recognized Mayor Borgo on November 16, 2010.

“Mayor Borgo set a precedent by voluntarily installing fire sprinklers in the apartment building,” says Tom Lia, executive director of the Northern Illinois Fire Sprinkler Advisory Board. “The decision to install fire sprinklers benefits everyone involved by providing protection and even reducing insurance rates.”
