Through his reporting, NBC 5 Chicago Investigative Reporter Phil Rogers has long been an advocate of fire safety in Chicago high-rises. His most recent report on February 15, 2017, follows up on compliance with the city’s high-rise fire safety measures 14 years after the fatal Cook County Administration Building fire.
Following that fire, the city enacted ordinances requiring fire sprinkler and fire safety system installations in both residential and commercial high-rises. The city’s residential high-rise Life Safety Evaluation compliance deadline was January 1, 2015, while the compliance deadline for the city’s commercial high-rise fire sprinkler retrofit deadline ended on January 1, 2017. However, many high-rise buildings have not yet complied.
