Wales Becomes First Country to Require Fire Sprinklers in New Homes

Wales has made history by becoming the first country in the world to require the installation of sprinklers in newly built homes.

On February 16, Welsh Assembly Members passed stages 3 & 4 of the domestic fire safety measure that will see sprinklers fitted in houses, flats, care homes and halls of residence throughout the country.

The Chief Fire Officers’ Association (CFOA) is delighted with the outcome and believes many lives will be saved as a result.

“This is a monumental achievement that will protect the lives of thousands of people. We at CFOA have been engaged with the process throughout and are keen to ensure legislation in England begins to catch up with that of our neighbors,” said Peter Holland, president of CFOA.

“CFOA will continue to put its weight behind increasing the use of sprinklers throughout the UK. The people of Wales will be kept safer as a result of this decision by the National Assembly for Wales and CFOA is committed to ensuring that all parts of the United Kingdom are able to enjoy the same levels of protection.”

CFOA applauds the tenacity and leadership of Ann Jones, Welsh Assembly Member for the Vale of Clwyd who has been instrumental in seeing through the change in legislation.

CFOA position statements on sprinklers in schools, residential care premises, commercial premises and domestic premises are publically available on the CFOA website.
